SHC is launching a Junior Coach Pilot Program to provide mentorship to players who want to get involved in coaching while giving our senior coaching staff the opportunity to help develop the future leaders of our association.
SHC believes investing in the development of leadership skills in our current SHC players at the grassroots level will provide the foundation for continued coaching excellence going forward. Junior Coaches can play a key role in inspiring young players by teaching the fundamentals of hockey and sharing their love of the sport while developing their leadership skills and a sense of community.
With the support of the SHC, Junior Coaches will be expected to complete Hockey Alberta Coach Development coursework and certifications, Respect in Sport Leader as well as other coaching requirements. With the guidance of the Senior Coaching staff of the team, Junior Coaches will develop drills, demonstrate skills and be on-ice leaders at practices.
The Junior coaches will be available to all Initiation, Novice, Atom and Peewee level teams who wish to participate in the program. Candidates will be vetted prior to contacting interested teams to discuss assignments. As this is a pilot program for the 2019-20 season, we will be looking for participant feedback from both the junior and senior coaches at the end of the season to determine the direction of the Junior Coaching program going forward.
